Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup rolled oats preferably old-fashioned
  • 3/4 cup milk dairy or plant-based
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 pinch salt

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Jar or container with lid

Method

  1. Combine the rolled oats, milk, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and a pinch of salt in a mixing bowl. Whisk the mixture together until the spices are evenly distributed and the oats are fully submerged.
  2. Pour the mixture into a jar or container with a lid, ensuring it’s enough to hold all the ingredients comfortably.
  3. Seal the jar tightly and give it a gentle shake to evenly coat all the oats and distribute the spices further.
  4. Place the jar in the refrigerator and let it soak overnight or for at least 6 hours, during which the oats will absorb the liquid, becoming tender and creamy.
  5. Once ready, open the jar and give the oats a quick stir to smooth out any uneven spots and check the consistency—creamy and thickened are signs they are perfect.
  6. Spoon the oats into bowls, and optionally top with your favorite toppings like fruits, nuts, or a drizzle of honey for extra flavor and texture.
