Ingredients

  • 14 oz firm tofu pressed and cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce dark, rich for deep umami
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil or substitute with olive or avocado oil
  • 1 teaspoon chili paste or Sriracha for smoky heat
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika for smoky aroma
  • 1 teaspoon cumin adds earthy depth
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder for savory punch
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes adjust for heat preference
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup or honey for sweetness

Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Silicone brush
  • Mixing bowl
  • Oven thermometer
  • Cooling rack (optional)

Method

  1. Start by pressing your tofu for at least 20 minutes to remove excess moisture, then cut it into uniform 1-inch cubes. Pat them dry to ensure they crisp up during roasting.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together soy sauce, sesame oil, chili paste, smoked paprika, cumin, garlic powder, red pepper flakes, and maple syrup until well combined. This spicy marinade will coat the tofu evenly.
  3. Add the tofu cubes to the bowl and gently toss to coat each piece thoroughly with the marinade. Let sit for about 10 minutes to absorb the flavors.
  4. Preheat your oven to 220°C (430°F) and line your baking sheet with parchment paper. Use a silicone brush to lightly coat the tofu with a bit of marinade for extra flavor and crispiness.
  5. Arrange the tofu cubes in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet, ensuring that no pieces are touching too much. Place in the oven and roast for 25 to 30 minutes, flipping halfway through, until edges are golden brown and crispy.
  6. Check the tofu at around 20 minutes; it should be turning crispy and fragrant with smoky spice aroma. If needed, roast a few more minutes until perfect.
  7. Once roasted, remove the tofu from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes. For extra crunch, you can broil it for 2 minutes, keeping a close eye to prevent burning.
  8. Serve the crispy, spicy tofu hot, garnished with a squeeze of lime or chopped fresh herbs if desired. It’s perfect over rice or alongside greens for a satisfying meal.
